Kalmadi's judicial custody extended till July 21

A Delhi court today extended the judicial custody of disgraced former chairman of Commonwealth Games OC Suresh Kalmadi and other officials till July 21 for their alleged involvement in irregularities in conducting the games.

Special CBI Judge Talwant Singh also asked the Tihar jail authority to explore the possibility of transporting them to court in separate jail vans after they expressed fear of being attacked by fellow undertrials.

Kalmadi and the four co-accused -- former OC secretary general Lalit Bhanot, former director general VK Verma and officials M Jaychandran, Surjit Lal and ASV Prasad-- currently lodged in Tihar jail said they apprehend they may be attacked by other undertrials in the jail van while travelling between jail and court.

The court also allowed Kalmadi's plea for medical examination and treatment.

Meanwhile, Swiss firm Swiss Timing, which was allegedly illegaly granted TSR contract refrained from complying with the court's order, saying summons were not served in accordance with the treaty between the two
countries.

Counsel for Swiss Timing, one of the eleven accused in the TSR (Timing, Scoring, Result) system scam, said that the summons issued to it by the court should have been served through appropiate authority in the Swiss government and not through post and the same has been conveyed to the Indian government through the Indian embassy.

The court has asked the CBI to file a reply on the same on July 21. Swiss Timing was issued summons on May 23 which was returnable by today.

The court also directed the jail superintendent to decide Jaychandran's plea for pen drive, home-made food books, soft mattresses and a watch.

The judge also ordered the CBI to supply e-copy of the charge sheet along with all the necessary documents to all the accused.

"Copies of all e-documents be uploaded on at least three computers in the computer center in Central Jail, Tihar and the accused be allowed to view them during office working hours subject to jail rules, if any," the judge said.

He also asked the jail superintendents "to arrange two personal computers in an appropriate place for them to view the e-charge sheet if they cannot be transported to the computer centre daily."

Meanwhile, counsels for promoters of two construction companies -- Anil Madan, P D Arya (Faridabad-based Gem International Firm) and A K Reddy (Hyderabad-based firm AKR Constructions)--- declared proclaimed offenders by the court, gave an undertaking that they would surrender within a week before the court if they are not granted releif from the Delhi High Court.

The trio have their anticipatory bail pleas pending before the high court.

The court also allowed Bhanot to issue cheques and sign documents relating to his tax returs with a copy being sent to the court for record.
