A 65-year-old tourist from Bhopal died in a road accident in North Goa after a rented Mahindra Thar SUV crashed into the rear of his family’s car. The accident took place on Monday at the busy Happy Bar junction in Assagao, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Bhagatram Sharma. He was travelling with his family in a Hyundai i20 hatchback when the collision occurred. According to police, the Thar SUV rammed into the back of their car.
Police said an FIR has been registered against a 19-year-old man from Delhi, Shaurya Goyal, who is suspected to have been behind the wheel of the Thar, NDTV reported. The rented vehicle has been seized by the police.
A case has been registered under sections 106(1) (causing death by negligence), 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the BNS at Anjuna police station.
The deceased suffered serious injuries in the crash and was declared dead at the scene. Two other family members who were in the hatchback sustained minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Doctors said their condition is stable.
A five-month-old baby who was also travelling in the car escaped without any injuries. As a precaution, the infant is under medical observation.
Police confirmed that the Mahindra Thar involved in the accident was a rented vehicle. Soon after the crash, eyewitnesses alleged that the occupants of the SUV tried to change seats.
A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, shows the young man, believed to have been driving the Thar, speaking on the phone. He can be heard saying, “Papa main gaadi chala raha tha… chauraha pe doosri gaadi aa rahi thi. Papa, Papa, suddenly ho gaya crash." In the same video, three women can be seen sitting in the back seats of the damaged SUV.
The situation at the accident spot allegedly became tense as local residents accused the Thar’s occupants of trying to protect the driver from being held responsible. Some eyewitnesses claimed that the vehicle was being driven by a woman at the time of the accident. They alleged that immediately after the crash, she moved to the passenger seat, while the male member of the group sat in the driver’s seat.
