A 16-year-old Class X student was allegedly gang-raped and murdered by five men from her village in Bihar's Saran district late on Wednesday evening, according to a TOI report.

The accused reportedly dragged the girl to a bathroom near her family's old house, raped her despite her screams for help and then threw her into a well before fleeing towards the fields, the report stated. Her family rushed to the spot after hearing her cries, but the perpetrators grabbed her by the legs and dumped her into the well, the TOI report added.

The victim's mother, who lives in the village with her two daughters while her husband works outside the state, alleged that one of the accused had previously attempted to rape her daughter. The girl's sister confirmed that all five suspects hailed from the same village and were known to the family.

Enraged villagers gathered at the scene upon learning of the incident and created a ruckus, forcing police to intervene. Officers pacified the mob with assurances and took one person into custody for questioning, the report said.

Saran police later clarified in a statement that the girl's body was handed over to the family following a post-mortem at Chhapra Sadar Hospital. They arrested one named accused, Yuvraj Kumar and are conducting raids to nab the remaining fugitives.
