‘Look, I wear Calvin Klein underwear’: Gurugram kids’ behaviour during fight sparks debate on parenting

In a city where luxury and branded lifestyles are everywhere, even children are noticing who has what. A video from a posh Gurugram society has recently gone viral, sparking questions about parenting, values, and how young kids see status and wealth.

The video was shared by a resident of a well-known society in Gurugram. He tells about a playground dispute between two children that quickly turned unusual. Instead of a normal argument, one child tried to assert superiority by pointing to the brand of his underwear.

“What a miserable life they are living and what a miserable their kids will live. I can’t imagine. You know I live in one of the well-known societies of Gurugram and you won’t believe – today’s generation kids are being taught such s*** either by their teachers or by their teachers or in their school,” he said.

He went on to describe what happened in the society playground. “My cousin was playing in playground in our society and some kids fought with each other. Instead of hitting each other, which is good thing, they were bragging about you know what,” he explained.

According to him, the moment that drew attention was when one child displayed the brand of his underwear, saying, “Dekh mai Calvin Klein ka underwear phenta hu, kya teri family mein koi phenta hai? (Look, I wear Calvin Klein underwear. Does anyone in your family wear it?).”

The man added that the child is in the third standard, “He knows Calvin Klein is a very big brand and is an expensive brand. Obviously, he doesn’t know it by himself. His parents are teaching him s***. Kya faida yaar itni wealth ka, kya faida itne paise hone ka jab ye sab seekha rahe ho tum? (What’s the point of so much wealth and money if this is what you are teaching them?)”

The video quickly sparked discussion on social media. Many viewers suggested the child was repeating behaviour he had observed at home. “That kid didn't invent that behaviour, that kind of arrogant shit gets learned somewhere…Kids simply copy the currency of respect they see at home and when status is the only thing adults worship dont act shocked when a 10 year old starts measuring human worth through underwear labels,” one user wrote.

Another comment criticised the focus on expensive schools over teaching values, “Their parents spend 4 to 5 lacs pa on an international school but they don't learn to be humble and kind. Wats the point of education for these kids when they run a brand factory instead of becoming useful resources for the country?”

Some pointed out a decline in moral upbringing, “Parenting has gone pathetic among indian parents. No moral values ethics repect to elders being taught. Honest and truth bed time stories are replaced with entertainment fun funky baseless cartoons or movie rubbishes.”

Others shared personal examples, highlighting how children can be taught the value of money and humility from a young age. A person wrote, “Its about upbringing. We were discussing my son's private high school fees. My son (primary) said 'Fees are so high'. Important is that they value money even if parents can afford it. You need to teach them from young age.”
