Software

The main highlight of WWDC 2021 is going to be software. Apple will unveil some of the new iPadOS 15, iOS 15 features at the event on June 7. The upcoming Apple event will also introduce users to macOS 12, watchOS 8, tvOS 15, etc.

1) iPadOS 15, iOS 15 features (rumoured)

Reports suggest that iPadOS 15 will bring improvements in the way users manage their apps. Apple is said to revamp the home screen, allowing users to place widgets anywhere on the screen. “For the iPad, Apple plans to revamp the home screen and support the placement of ‌widgets‌ -- snippets of dynamic information like calendar, weather, and stocks -- anywhere on the screen. This is a commonly requested feature that will bring the ‌iPad‌ in line with Android rivals. The company also plans an improved multitasking system to make it easier to operate multiple apps at the same time,” a Bloomberg report stated.

Mark Gurman further retreated his previous report on the introduction of system-wide status for iPhone and iPad. He claims that the upcoming iPadOS and iOS 15 feature will allow users to set a status, depending on which their notifications will be handled. Users can also set an automatic reply to incoming notifications depending on the status they have set on their device. “The update will also include a larger focus on auto-replying to messages and a new design for incoming notification banners at the top of the screen,” the report added.

Apple is also likely to make some improvements in the App Tracking Transparency feature. The company is said to introduce a new control panel that provides in-depth detail on what data are being collected by each third-party app installed on a user’s device.

2) macOS 12

Very little is known about the next software for Mac. Some of the rumoured macOS 12 names include Mammoth, Monterey, and Skyline. The company has already trademarked these names previously, according to MacRumors. It is not necessary though that the macOS 12 update will get either of the mentioned names. Apple has previously used some landmark names for its software without trademarking them.

3) watchOS 8, tvOS 15

Apple’s next watchOS 8 update for Apple Watch is likely to introduce some new health and fitness-related features. Mark Gurman previously claimed that  Apple will introduce improved health tracking features and "interface improvements.”

A recent report claimed that Apple is planning on introducing a new food tracking feature to the Health app. Details about the rumoured feature are unavailable. It could allow users to log details around the food items they consume and provide nutritional details for the same.

tvOS 15 is also likely to get announced at WWDC 2021. Nothing is known about the upcoming Apple software update for TV at the moment.

Hardware

Apple typically unveils new software for its devices across various platforms. The upcoming Apple Event is expected to unveil iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 7, macOS 12, and tvOS 15. Apple could unveil a new MacBook Pro and other hardware products at the WWDC 2021. A recent report claimed that Apple has a “few surprises” in-store.

 New 2021 MacBook Pro

Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives claims that the new MacBook Pros will launch at the WWDC 2021. He, however, claims that they will feature the already-existing M1 chip.

Reports in the past claimed that the upcoming Pro MacBook models will come in 14-inch and 16-inch display sizes. The two variants are expected to come with a more powerful version of the M1 chip, or even possibly the M2 chip. Bloomberg recently claimed that Apple will launch the two variants with different chips codenamed Jade C-Chop and Jade C-Die.

The upcoming 2021 MacBook Pro models are tipped to get a major design overhaul. The lower-end 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro is codenamed J314, whereas the 16-inch variant is codenamed J316. Both models will come with a redesigned chassis and magnetic charging.

The new MacBook Pro model will have more ports. The right side of the MacBook Pro will have an HDMI port and an SD card reader slot. It will have three USB Type-C ports as opposed to four on the current generation. Two out of the three Type-C ports will be placed on the left edge. The report also reveals that MagSafe is making a comeback on the MacBook, with the slot located on the left side of the machine.
