Apple’s long-anticipated smart glasses are edging closer to reality, with an unveiling expected in 2026 and a release likely the following year. Unlike early assumptions tied to AR displays and full visionOS integration, leaks now point to a very different first-generation product. Instead of a heads-up display, Apple is reportedly building AI-driven Apple Glasses that function more like an intelligent companion accessory to the iPhone.

Early smart glasses attempts, such as Google Glass, fell flat, while Meta’s Ray-Ban line has gained momentum thanks to integrated AI and lightweight design. Apple appears to be responding to this shift with a model that leans heavily on Apple Intelligence and real-world awareness rather than augmented reality.

The first version of Apple Glasses is expected to include a suite of new features. A custom chip derived from the S-series used in the Apple Watch should emphasise power efficiency and handle the device’s multiple cameras. These cameras will support photo and video capture, but more importantly they will enable visual intelligence capabilities such as recognising objects, scenes and contextual information. This awareness could unlock a range of Apple Intelligence features already emerging on iPhone.

A newly upgraded Siri is expected to be central to the experience, with voice commanding most interactions. Built-in speakers will support media playback and responses, although the device will naturally work well with AirPods. As with the Apple Watch, Apple Glasses will rely on a paired iPhone for certain processing tasks and connectivity. Health-tracking features are also under exploration, though specific sensors have not yet been revealed.

Apple is expected to market the device not only as a tech accessory but also as a fashion product. Multiple styles are reportedly planned, mirroring Apple Watch’s approach to personalisation and everyday wearability.

While the first model will not include a display, Apple is already working on a more advanced version with an integrated screen for the future. If Apple can pair robust AI capabilities with seamless iPhone integration, Apple Glasses may follow the company’s familiar pattern of entering a category late and reshaping it on arrival.
