  • Foldable iPhone may have under-display camera, 7-8 inch screen

Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone may finally be taking shape, and if a new report is anything to go by, it could arrive with a very premium name — and an even more premium price tag. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is likely considering the name “iPhone Ultra” for its foldable phone, with a price that could exceed $2,000.

If that happens, it would easily become the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever released.

The “Ultra” branding would place the foldable iPhone above the current Pro and Pro Max models, positioning it as the company’s most advanced and exclusive smartphone. Apple has increasingly used the Ultra name for its top-tier products, including the Apple Watch Ultra and its high-performance M-series Ultra chips, so extending it to the iPhone would fit neatly into the company’s strategy of creating a clear premium tier.

The biggest highlight of the device is expected to be its large foldable display. When unfolded, the screen could expand to around 7 or 8 inches, similar to foldable phones already available from companies like Samsung. However, Apple is reportedly planning to go a step further by using under-display camera technology, which would allow the front camera to sit beneath the screen. That means no notch, no punch-hole and no Dynamic Island interrupting the display — just a clean, uninterrupted screen.

While under-display cameras already exist on some Android phones, the technology still struggles with image quality. Apple is known for waiting until technologies mature before adopting them, so it may only introduce the feature once it can deliver better results.

The foldable iPhone is also expected to be part of a broader expansion of Apple’s Ultra ecosystem. Gurman’s report suggests the company is exploring other ambitious products, including AirPods with built-in cameras designed to support future augmented reality experiences. These cameras could help devices better understand the environment around the user.

Meanwhile, Apple is also said to be working on a touchscreen MacBook Pro, which could launch in late 2026 alongside new M6 chips. A touchscreen Mac has long been requested by users, and such a move would mark a major shift in Apple’s laptop design philosophy.

Behind the scenes, Apple is reportedly experimenting with new manufacturing techniques as well. One of these includes 3D-printed aluminium alloy components, which could speed up production and enable more complex designs.

As for the foldable iPhone itself, the timeline remains uncertain. Most estimates suggest it could arrive around 2026 or 2027, as Apple is unlikely to launch such a complex device until durability issues — such as screen creases and hinge reliability — are fully solved.

Foldable phones remain a niche category today, but Apple’s entry could reshape the market. The bigger question, however, is whether consumers are ready to spend more than $2,000 for a foldable iPhone.
