Value addition in India’s total annual seafood exports was stagnant at around 6-7 percent till Covid-19 exploded globally. In the last couple of years, it has risen to around 10 percent, according to MPEDA sources.
The volume shrunk by 10.88% at 11,49,341 tonnes from a year ago with the flagship product frozen shrimp recording a 9.5% fall at 5,90,275 tonnes, as per the data released by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA).

"Seafood exports to China have increased substantially in the current financial year as compared to the same period last year. In April-December 2019, the total exports stood at 2,42,218 tonnes valued at USD 1,032 million as against 1,65,950 tonnes valued at USD 589 million in the same period last year, said MPEDA chairman K S Srinivas.
"Met a delegation of representatives from Seafood Exporters Association to aggressively promote fisheries exports and chalk out a roadmap for USD 30 billion of exports," the minister said in a tweet.
USA, the leading destination for Indian seafood in value terms, imported seafood worth USD 2,320.05 million, registering a growth of 31.37 percent, 28.63 percent and 33. 97 percent in quantity, rupee and dollar terms, respectively.
The Union Government, as well as exporters, are positive about achieving exports worth USD 6 billion in the current fiscal.
"The country's seafood exports have been growing significantly over the past five years with figures of USD 5.5 billion in 2014-15. The country exported 9,45,892 MT of seafood worth USD 4.7 billion in 2015-16 and worth USD 5.78 billion in 2016-17," A Jayathilak, chairman of Marine Product Export Development Authority said.
