The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on December 8 registered a historic victory, its seventh, in the Gujarat Assembly elections but lost Himachal Pradesh to Congress.

With counting of votes crossing the halfway mark in most constituencies of Gujarat, the BJP has received 53 per cent of the votes counted, while the Congress has 27 per cent and the AAP 13 per cent.
In a series of tweets, Amit Shah said he salutes the people of Gujarat on this historic victory and it shows the "unwavering faith of the public in Narendra Modi's development model".
Yogesh Patel was leading by over 40,000 votes after 22 rounds over Kanti Sodha Parmar of Congress in Anand, which gave the world the famous 'Amul' dairy brand.
"This election result will have a positive effect on the Karnataka elections as well. It will be a major morale booster for the BJP cadre and supporters. Our victory is guaranteed if we work with more vigour," Basavaraj Bommai told reporters here.

Counting of votes for a new assembly in Gujarat got underway on Thursday morning, with early trends pointing to a sweeping victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that has not lost an election in the state since 1995.
Riding on the Modi factor, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is confident of retaining power in Gujarat while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is looking to make a strong debut and Congress is seeking a favourable verdict as the counting of votes in the Assembly elections is underway.
The BJP was leading in 42 seats, while Congress was ahead in six and the AAP was winning four seats, according to early trends reported by the Election Commission.
Voting began at 8 am across 14,975 polling stations and will continue till 5 pm.
Amit Shah, who represents Gandhinagar seat in the Lok Sabha, reached the Naranpura sub-zonal office polling booth here along with his family members including wife Sonalben Shah and son Jay Shah.
Polling is underway since 8 am for the second and final phase of the state elections in 93 constituencies across 14 districts in the central and north regions and will go on till 5 pm.
In the morning, the EC tweeted a picture of a centenarian voter, Kamuben Patel, proudly showing her inked finger after casting her vote at a polling station in Umbergaon Assembly constituency in Valsad district.
Voting is underway on Thursday for the first phase of elections in 89 seats of Saurashtra and south Gujarat regions, while the polling in the remaining 93 seats including 16 of Ahmedabad city will take place on December 5.
The voting is being held across 14,382 polling stations, of which 3,311 are in the urban and 11,071 in rural areas, the office of the state Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) said.
It also promised to conduct surveys of madrassas (Islamic seminaries) and scrutinize the assets of the Waqf Board.
The model code of conduct has been in force since November 3 in the state where elections will be held in two phases – on December 1 and 5.
The BJP, which is contesting all 89 seats, have 79 candidates or 89 per cent of its nominees with assets above Rs one crore.
Modi's remarks came after Jam Saheb Shatrushalya Singhji, scion of the Jamnagar royal family, cast his vote at his residence in the presence of the deputy collector and other election officials on Monday.
The ruling BJP and opposition Congress have together fielded sons of sitting and former MLAs in at least 20 of the total 182 constituencies.
This rally will be held at Jujwa village in Valsad around 6.30 pm, sources said.
The total number of candidates declared so far by the party is 104.
The polling for the Himachal Pradesh assembly began at 8 am today. Voting in Gujarat will take place in two stages.
