Crops are withstanding moderate change in climatic conditions
Oilseeds production, too, is expected to increase by 2 million tonnes to record 40 million tonnes in 2022-23 crop year (July-June), as per the second advance estimates of production of foodgrains released by the agriculture ministry.
The agriculture ministry said the foodgrain production is estimated to rise 2.66 per cent to a new record of 305.43 million tonnes in the current crop year 2020-21, on better output of rice, wheat and pulses amid good monsoon last year.
The foodgrain output in the 2017-18 crop year (July-June) is estimated at an all-time high 277.49 million tonnes, as per the second advance estimates released by the ministry in February. The record production in last couple of years has led to fall in prices of agri-commodities and level of distress in farm sector.
This is the second round of advance estimates for 2017-2018 crop production issued by the government.
According to the first advance estimate released today by the agriculture ministry, production of all kharif foodgrains -- rice, pulses and coarse cereals -- is projected to decline from the record 138.52 mt last kharif.
Foodgrain production stood at 124.01 million tonnes (MT) in the kharif season of 2015-16 crop year (July-June).
Concerned over low output of pulses and decrease in the sowing area this kharif season, the government has earmarked additional Rs 80 crore to help states increase the acreage under the staple foodgrain during the approaching rabi season.
India produced 85.93 million tonnes (mt) of wheat and 18.09 mt of pulses-- all-time records-- during 2010-11 crop year, helped by higher support price to farmers and good monsoon.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the country has achieved a record foodgrain production of 241 million tonnes (MT) in 2010-11 crop year but stressed on ushering in a second Green Revolution to meet the mounting future domestic foodgrain demands.
The government aims to achieve an all-time high of 245 million tonnes (MT) of foodgrain production in 2011-12 crop year, notwithstanding a below normal monsoon forecast by the Met Department.
