Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath on July 15 met the party's interim president Sonia Gandhi amid speculation of a reshuffle in Congress leadership.

The 74-year-old leader, currently leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh, may be entrusted with a key role in the party, according to the reports. He may be appointed as the party’s new working or interim president until a new president of the grand old party is elected, some reports suggested.

Sources said Kamal Nath’s visit to Delhi was part of series of meetings of Congress leaders with interim president Sonia Gandhi ahead of a reshuffle in the party’s leadership.

The Congress party has been mulling changes in leadership for quite some time now.  The revival plans were sparked recently when poll strategist Prashant Kishor met with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

In May, the Congress puts off party president election for third time citing COVID-19 pandemic.

Election for Congress’ top post has been in turmoil ever since the party's debacle in 2019. Rahul Gandhi, who took over the post from mother Sonia Gandhi in 2017, stepped down after the 2019 defeat. The Congress has since failed to find a replacement and, thus, urged Sonia Gandhi to continue as the party’s interim chief.
