Why checking your credit report matters Your credit report is a history of your credit record and payment behaviour, and it has a significant role to play in determining your credit score. This score is used by lenders to decide whether to offer you a loan or credit card. In India, you can keep checking your report from time to time to track your financial position and catch errors or identity theft early on so that it does not impact your score.

You also get one free report from each agency per year As per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, all four credit bureaus—TransUnion CIBIL, Equifax, Experian, and CRIF High Mark—must give one free credit report to each consumer in each calendar year. This means that you can get four free credit reports in aggregate—one from each of the four bureaus—without an ounce of expenditure. But you need to apply for them individually on each of the four bureaus' websites.

Review and adjust your reports thoroughly Once you've gathered all four reports, study them thoroughly. In some cases, the data in various bureaus can vary as lenders report to only some of them. Look for errors such as incorrect loan amounts, closed accounts that were reported open, or postponed payments that were never missed. If you do find any issue, you can challenge it with the bureau so that they update it and your score is still healthy.
