National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development three years ago. These rankings list the top educational institutions in the country on an overall basis and also by specific disciplines like engineering, medicine, law and management

IISc Bengaluru topped the list for 2018, replicating its 2017 performance. This institute has also featured in global rankings like QS Higher Education Rankings and Times Higher Education Rankings in the past few years

Among universities as well, IISc Bengaluru topped the list. They were closely followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Banaras Hindu University

Among colleges, Delhi had the most number of institutes taking up the top ten positions in the NIRF Rankings. Chennai was a close second with three institutes making it to the list.

It was no surprise that IIM Ahmedabad took the top spot in the list of management institutes. Except Xavier Labour Relations Institute and a few IITs, the list was dominated by the IIMs with IIM Kozhikode, a relatively newer institute than the ones at Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Lucknow and Bangalore also featured among the top ten.

As expected, AIIMS New Delhi topped the list in the area of medicine. There was a good mix of private and government medical colleges. Engineering and medicine are often considered the two most popular fields of education in the country.

In the area of pharmacy, a Chandigarh-based institute was on top of the list. Mumbai, surprisingly, had three representatives in the list. Usually, medicine and pharmacy are considered close counterparts.
