In another case of suicide that has surfaced against the backdrop of the alleged pressure mounted by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a 25-year-old revenue official has taken his own life in Uttar Pradesh.
What came as a bigger shock is the fact that the official died by suicide one day before his wedding, following which, family members staged protests. The incident took place in Khajua town under the Bindki police limits in Fatehpur district.
The deceased, Sudhir Kumar, was serving as an SIR supervisor and was found hanging inside his home on Tuesday morning. Kumar was scheduled to get married on Wednesday and his pre-wedding ceremonies were happening when he took the extreme step.
Jagran reported that Sudhir was granted leave for his wedding and SDM Priyanka Agarwal said that his seven days leave had been approved.
The family members, however, argued that Sudhir was under immense stress because he was being threatened with suspension over SIR-related work - a fact that senior officials have denied.
The family said that on Tuesday morning, a kanungo - who is a revenue inspector, had visited Sudhir's home and had given him a bundle of forms to feed in the system, as part of SIR drive, after which, Sudhir locked himself inside his room. He was then found hanging.
Police, forensic experts, the SDM and ADM Avinash Tripathi soon arrived and started a probe in the matter, reports said. The bodi was also sent for post-mortem.
Congress leader Supriya Shrinate took to X to criticise the whole incident. "In Fatehpur, UP, SIR supervisor Sudhir Kumar committed suicide by hanging himself one day before his wedding. Sudhir’s wedding was on November 26, but he did not get leave," she wrote
“When Sudhir did not go to work due to being busy with wedding preparations, the Kanungo came to his house, scolded him, and threatened to fire him. This is murder — and the biggest culprits are Narendra Modi and Gyanesh Gupta. Is it SIR or a scene of death?" she further said.
