Nearly a year after the tragic rape and murder of a student at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata is again grappling with a similar incident. A law student in South Kolkata was allegedly raped inside a college campus in the Kasba area on Wednesday evening, leading to widespread outrage and political tensions.
The father of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim has spoken out following this latest incident, expressing his anguish over the ongoing violence against women in the city and holding the government accountable for failing to prevent such crimes.
“Such incidents keep happening again and again. After what happened to my daughter, many people took to the streets in protest. Even after that, these crimes continue. People within the college are committing these acts,” he told ANI, nearly a year after his daughter’s case sparked nationwide outrage.
“This government has a significant role in all of this. The accused are all associated with the TMC, so this political party must ensure that such incidents do not happen again. The perpetrators should be severely punished,” he added.
The recent case, reported on Wednesday evening, involves the alleged rape of a female student within a law college in Kolkata’s Kasba area. According to police sources, the incident occurred between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM on the college premises.
Three accused individuals, Monojit Mishra, 31, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, 20, were either former students or staff of the institution. A fourth arrest was made on Saturday when the security guard of the college was taken into custody.
All three primary suspects were arrested within 24 hours. Two of them were apprehended near Talbagan Crossing in the city, while the third was arrested later that night at his residence.
The police have seized their mobile phones and secured the crime scene for forensic examination. A plea for police custody will be submitted to the Alipore A.C.J.M. court, according to the authorities.
The victim’s family has filed a complaint, and the victim has provided a formal statement identifying the accused, ANI reported, citing police.
The incident has prompted political reactions as well. The BJP's Bengal unit posted on X, labelling TMC as “Terror, Molester, and Corruption.” Trinamool Congress minister Shashi Panja responded at a press conference, stating, “The police acted within 12 hours. All three are in custody, and an investigation is ongoing. If the BJP wants to serve as a responsible opposition, they should act accordingly.”
Panja further emphasised that TMC does not condone such acts and rejected claims that its student wing promotes criminal behaviour. “This incident is being taken seriously. The BJP is politicising it because such swift action is not seen in BJP-ruled states,” she said.
