Amid nationwide outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old female PG trainee doctor in Kolkata, Uttarakhand police on August 14 apprehended a suspect in the alleged rape and murder of a 33-year-old nurse who went missing on July 30 in Rudrapur, Udham Singh Nagar district.
The victim, a resident of Gadarpur’s Islamnagar, worked as a nurse at a private hospital in Nainital and lived with her 11-year-old daughter in Bilaspur Colony. Her sister reported her missing on July 31, prompting a police investigation.
Over a week later, her body was discovered in an empty plot in Uttar Pradesh’s Dibdiba area and was subsequently sent for a post-mortem examination.

The suspect, identified as Dharmendra, a laborer from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. According to police, Dharmendra lured the nurse into the bushes, where he raped and strangled her to death before fleeing with her jewelry.
The investigation was aided by CCTV footage showing the victim’s last known movements in a tempo from Indra Chowk in Rudrapur. Police tracked the location of her stolen mobile phone, which led them to Dharmendra. During interrogation, he confessed to attacking the nurse near Basundhara Apartment on Kashipur Road with the intent to rob her. After the assault, he raped and murdered her before escaping with her belongings.
