While addressing the nation on the 78th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said there is outrage in the society over atrocities against women and state governments must take this seriously.
Without mentioning about the recent incident of alleged rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata, PM Modi said, “Cases of crime against women should be investigated and those responsible should be punished without delay.”
According to the PM, the country is angry over it. “I would like to express my pain once again, from the Red Fort today. As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against women that are happening - there is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage. The country, society, and state governments will have to take this seriously. Speedy investigation of crimes against women, those executing these monstrous deeds be awarded strict punishment at the earliest.”
The PM said, “it is important to create fear for consequences of rape”. He said it is needed to speak about action taken against rapists so that it can act as deterrent. “When the case of rape happens, media discusses the case at length, but when these perpetrators are brought to the books, there is very little discussion on the same. We need to speak about the action taken on such criminals so that it can act as a deterrent,” he said.
There have been massive protests across India over the rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor. Kolkata witnessed the "Reclaim the Night" protest on Wednesday night.
