Aarogya Maitri Cubes, the world’s first disaster hospital packed in 72 cubes that can be airlifted, had its test run by the Indian Air Force at Agra on May 14.

Built under project Bhishm, or Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri, Aarogya Maitri Cubes is designed to be deployed anywhere at any time to address an emergency situation.

The Aid Cube is equipped with several innovative tools that enhance disaster response and offer medical support during emergencies. It integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics to facilitate effective coordination, real-time monitoring, and efficient management of medical services in the field.

Project Bhishma was announced in February 2022, following which the Ministry of Defence set up a task force towards this initiative. At the Global South Summit in January 2023, PM Modi announced the ‘Aarogya Maitri’ project under which India will provide essential medical supplies to any developing country affected by natural disaster or humanitarian crisis.

What does it do?

The whole unit contains 72 easily transportable components that can be conveniently carried by hand, cycle, or even drone, providing unmatched flexibility, said a statement.

In the event of mass casualty incidents (MCIs), where requirements range from basic aid to advanced medical and surgical care, the Aid Cube stands out with its ability to be deployed within  12 minutes.

The cubes can handle injuries like bullet wounds, major bleeding, severe burns, head injuries, long limb fractures, spinal injuries, chest injuries and spinal fractures.

The indigenously developed technology was also used in Ayodhya recently to bolster medical readiness and response capabilities during the 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony in January. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ayodhya for the Pran Pratishtha ceremony on January 22.
