The Bihar Congress on Friday ordered an internal inquiry after a controversial AI-generated video mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, Hiraben Modi, surfaced on social media.

The video, which carried the Hindi caption “‘Ma’ appears in Sahab’s dreams. Watch the interesting dialogue,” showed a Modi lookalike preparing for bed, remarking, “I’m done with today’s ‘vote chori,’ let’s get a good night’s sleep now.”

In the dream sequence, a character resembling his mother scolds him for misusing her name in politics, asking, “How far are you willing to fall when it comes to politics?”

The clip triggered sharp reactions from the BJP, which accused Congress of dragging Modi’s mother into political attacks. The party’s official X handle wrote, “The first Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi’s late mother was abused from the Congress-RJD platform. Now, a video of their mother is being made to insult her. Have some shame, Congress people, how much lower will you stoop?”

BJP leaders lined up to condemn the post. MP Nishikant Dubey said the video exposed a “deplorable mindset,” adding, “Leave aside the Prime Minister’s mother. A man from a poor village background becoming Prime Minister may be against Western culture, but here he has been insulted throughout his life — once branded a merchant of death, and now subjected to the lowest depths of abuse.”

Party spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari alleged the video was circulated at the behest of Rahul Gandhi, claiming it insulted all women. He warned voters in Bihar would deliver a “fitting reply” in the coming elections.

Union minister Anurag Thakur also hit out, saying, “RJD and Congress have shown the depths to which politics can sink. To engage in mudslinging and insult someone’s mother, especially one who has passed away, is shameful.”

While the Bihar Congress has promised to identify those behind the video, senior leader Pawan Khera appeared to defend the campaign, saying, “There is no sympathy for these matters anymore. PM Modi is in politics; he has to handle everything, including the opposition’s sense of humour, appropriately. In fact, there is a lesson to be learnt here.”

The controversy adds to recent tensions, coming days after Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Vote Adhikar Yatra’ in Darbhanga, where abusive slogans targeting Modi’s mother were allegedly raised from a Congress-RJD stage.
