KL Rahul’s 94 went in vain as Jasprit Bumrah starred with his death bowling antics to help Mumbai Indians (MI) complete a 3-run win over Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in the 50th match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2018 to stay alive in the tournament. With this loss, KXIP’s chances to qualify for the playoffs have taken a massive hit.

Chasing 187, Punjab lost Gayle (18) in the 4th over. But a 111-run partnership between KL Rahul and Aaron Finch (46) kept them sailing towards the target. Rahul looked in brilliant touch as he has been throughout the tournament. Finch looked like he was finally arriving but he never really took off. At one stage KXIP looked like romping home in style and on the other, it seemed they have left it for too late. With 42 needed off the last four overs and nine wickets in hand, Punjab would have backed themselves to win the game. But Bumrah had other ideas as he dismissed Finch and Marcus Stoinis (1) in the 17th over to give a double blow to Punjab. And in the 19th over, he sealed the game with Rahul’s wicket leaving 17 to chase for Punjab in the last over. Mitchell McClenaghan managed to keep things in control as 13 runs and a wicket came off the last over and Punjab finished with 183/5.

Earlier, after asked to bat, Mumbai scored 79/4 in the first 10 overs and 107/4 in the last 10 overs. The hosts got off to a decent start but Andrew Tye (4/16) dismissed Ishan Kishan (20) and Suryakumar Yadav (27) on consecutive balls in his second over. In the space of five overs, MI lost four wickets and were in a spot of bother at 71/4. That’s when Krunal Pandya (32) and Kieron Pollard (50) steadied the innings with a 65-run partnership. But Ashwin (2/18) swung the momentum back in Punjab’s favour with quick wickets of Pollard and Ben Cutting at the death. However, a few late hits from Mitchell McClenaghan (11*) propelled Mumbai to 186/8 after 20 overs.

Turning Point

The penultimate over bowled by Jasprit Bumrah which saw Rahul going back to the dugout was the turning point of the match. Despite losing two wickets in the 17th over, Rahul held the key for Punjab but Bumrah got Rahul packing with a slower ball, leaving the visitors with 17 runs to chase in the last over which they couldn’t.

Best Dismissal

For the sheer price tag Rahul’s wicket had on it, his is the best dismissal of the match. It was the off cutter from Bumrah which Rahul tried to loft over long off for a maximum but since it came slower off the pitch, Rahul only got the toe end of his bat on the ball and holed out at long off.

Batsman of the Match

How many times has he proved his mettle for KXIP this season and how many times his teammates have let him down! Rahul’s 94 off 60 was as good an innings you would see but it wasn’t enough to take Punjab to victory. But that can’t take any credit away from Rahul who batted with sheer class and authority. He is the batsman of the match.

Bowler of the Match

For bringing his side back into the game to helping them win the last over thriller, Jasprit Bumrah is the bowler of the match. He finished with excellent figures of 3/15. All of his wickets came at a time when Punjab looked all set for a thumping victory.

Captain’s views

Rohit Sharma (MI Captain): After a win, we always feel good. It was an important game for us. We played a perfect game. Whatever we asked of the boys, they did it. It's never been easy for us in the past few years. We always knew it was going to be a good pitch. We lost our plot in the middle with the bat a bit. Take nothing away from the bowlers. Hats off to them. They came out and delivered the goods. Pollard has always been a match winner for us. Leaving him out has always been a tough decision. We picked him over Duminy as we thought he'd finish better. Come the big game, he always stands up for us. He has been a crucial member of our squad for a number of years.  Jasprit has taken over from Malinga. He has come a long way in the last two years. He is the one who has taken the responsibility. Malinga will be missed but Bumrah has replaced him beautifully. What he does for us is very, very important.

R Ashwin (KXIP Captain):  I feel pretty blank at this time. We were in the chase all along. It just didn't work out this time. It looked like it was going to be a clinical romp. Credit to Bumrah. He was outstanding at the death. Today was one of those days. We need results to go our way. We were very up front about things last time. KL Rahul is looking a billion dollars at this point. He has hardly mistimed a ball all innings.

What’s next

Both teams would now be in action on Sunday. Mumbai travel to Delhi to take on the Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla whereas Kings XI Punjab face Chennai Super Kings at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune.

Points Table

Both MI and KXIP have 12 points each after this game but Mumbai have climbed to the fourth spot owing to a better net run rate. On the other hand, Punjab have slipped down to sixth spot due to a poor net run rate.
