Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) announced the strategic acquisition of 50 MHz of spectrum across the low and mid bands (900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 2500 MHz) in 11 circles for a total investment of Rs 3,510 crore, during the spectrum auctions that concluded on June 26.

In addition to renewing its 900 MHz spectrum in the UP West and West Bengal circles, VIL said it has enhanced its 900 MHz spectrum holdings in seven circles: Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP East, and Kolkata. The telecom service provider said this acquisition will allow it to allocate significant 900 MHz spectrum for 4G, enhancing the 4G customer experience, particularly for indoor coverage.

This will be the first time that VIL offers 4G on the sub-GHz 900 band in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu (excluding Chennai), Punjab, and large parts of Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh (East).

VIL further stated that it has acquired 1800 MHz spectrum in Madhya Pradesh and 2500 MHz spectrum in Bihar. The company said it already holds a competitive 5G spectrum portfolio in its 17 priority circles.

The Aditya Birla Group and Vodafone Group partnership company said this strategic spectrum acquisition aligns with its long-term plan to enhance customer experience and effectively utilize spectrum across both existing and emerging technologies.

The telecom company also said throughout 2024, it has raised approximately Rs 24,000 crore in equity, including a proposed preferential issue of Rs 2,458 crore to Nokia and Ericsson, pending shareholder approval. Additionally, it said it is actively discussing raising up to Rs 25,000 crore in debt funding with its lenders.

CEO Akshaya Moondra stated that VIL's strategic spectrum acquisition in select markets will enhance its portfolio and enable advanced technology use, improving customer experience and strengthening its market position amidst its growth and funding plans.

“VIL has strategically acquired spectrum in the select markets to enhance and strengthen its overall spectrum portfolio. This acquisition will enable us to effectively use dedicated sub GHz spectrum towards advanced technologies to enhance the experience we offer to our customers. As VIL embarks on its growth journey with the fund-raising plan in place, this spectrum acquisition will further strengthen its competitive position in the market,” Moondra said.
