Strong tremors rattled Kolkata and parts of West Bengal on Friday morning after a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck in Bangladesh, according to seismic agencies. Residents reported feeling brief but forceful shaking, prompting many to evacuate buildings for safety.
The quake was recorded at 10:08 am IST, with its epicentre located approximately 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi, Bangladesh, at a shallow depth of 10 km, according to Indian and international seismic authorities. The US Geological Survey also confirmed significant tremors and noted the proximity of the fault zones.
Residents in Kolkata described a moment of panic as household items—such as chandeliers, lights, fans, and water bottles—shook visibly. Videos of the same were also shared by people on X.
