About three weeks after announcing plans to get into the electric hatchback segment, Tata Motors introduced the battery-powered Tiago, which is available in four variants and is priced in the range of Rs 8.49 lakh to Rs 11.79 lakh (see table).
The Mumbai-based automaker said the introductory prices would be applicable to the first 10,000 customers. Bookings will start on October 10 and deliveries will kick off by January 2023. The company said 2,000 units of the Tata Tiago EV will be reserved for existing EV customers.
With the Tiago EV, Tata Motors now has three models in its passenger EV portfolio, which includes Nexon EV and Tigor EV. The new passenger EV is based on Ziptron technology, an in-house developed high-voltage architecture featuring a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor.
“With the launch of the Tiago EV, the nation can take a giant leap forward in an ideal fun hatch which offers premium, safety and technology features, eco-friendly footprint, and spirited performance, all made even more desirable with the added advantage of a low cost of ownership,” said Shailesh Chandra, managing director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility. He said the new model has two options of battery packs and four charging solutions.
The two battery pack options – 24 kWh and 19.2 kWh – support a range of 315 km and 250 km, respectively, on a single charge. The company said the Tiago EV has a peak output of 55 kw and a peak torque of 114 Nm. It can accelerate from 0-60 kmph in 5.7 seconds.
The e-Tiago can be charged using a 15 A socket at home, a 3.3 kW AC charger, a 7.2 kW AC home charger, and a DC fast charger. The e-car will be offered with an eight year or 160,000 km battery and motor warranty. It will be available in two driving modes – City and Sport.
The e-hatch will be equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, an eight-speaker Harman infotainment system, and other connected car technologies. It comes with automatic projector headlamps, fog lamps, dual-tone alloy wheels, and hill ascent/descent assist, among other features.
Tata Motors is the current market leader in India’s passenger EV market, with a share of about 88 percent, led by Nexon EV.
“As early entrants, we have shaped the market and seen it grow with Nexon EV and Tigor EV. We have over 40,000 Tata EVs plying on the road,” Chandra had said earlier.
Chandra revealed earlier that the company foresees 20 percent of its total passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market to come from EVs in the next three years.
