TVS Motor Company continued to dominate India’s electric two-wheeler market in August, selling 24,087 scooters, according to data from the government’s VAHAN registration portal as on August 31, 2025. The company, which has been steadily building on the success of its iQube range, saw a 37 percent year-on-year (YoY) jump in sales.
Ola Electric, which has been grappling with cooling demand and intensifying competition, overtook Bajaj Auto to reclaim the number two position. The Bengaluru-based startup sold 18,972 units in August, though its sales were down 31 percent from a year earlier.
Ather Energy, which made its public market debut recently, followed closely with 17,856 units sold during the month, narrowing its gap with Ola. The EV maker clocked a robust 65 percent YoY growth, signaling rising acceptance of its premium electric scooters.
Hero MotoCorp, India’s largest conventional two-wheeler maker, also made a mark in August by overtaking Bajaj Auto in EV sales for the first time. The company sold 13,313 electric scooters, a 180 percent surge compared to the year-ago period, underscoring its growing push into the electric mobility segment.
In contrast, Bajaj Auto’s EV sales slumped 30 percent YoY to 11,730 units. Once seen as a strong contender with its Chetak EV brand, the company appears to be losing ground to rivals amid intensifying competition and expanding model portfolios across the industry.
According to VAHAN data, overall retail sales of electric two-wheelers touched 1,03,802 units in August 2025.
The August numbers highlight a reshuffle in the pecking order of India’s electric scooter market, with legacy automakers like TVS and Hero strengthening their presence while startups such as Ola and Ather battle for dominance.
With festive season demand approaching and new product launches in the pipeline, competition in the EV space is expected to intensify further in the coming months.
In fact, Ola Electric on August 15 announced the integration of its indigenously developed 4680 battery cell into two of its key models — the S1 Pro Plus electric scooter and the Roadster X Plus motorcycle, marking a milestone in its localisation push. Deliveries of the updated vehicles will begin post Navaratri.
The company also unveiled the S1 Pro Sport, priced at Rs 1,49,999, with bookings opening today and deliveries set to start in January 2026. The S1 Pro Sport comes with a top speed of 152 kmph.
Ather announced a slate of product and tech launches. The highlight was the unveiling of its new EL platform, its first new vehicle architecture since the 450, designed for versatility, scalability and cost optimisation. Built on 26 lakh km of field data, EL promises faster assembly, lower costs and advanced safety features like electronic braking.
Ather also rolled out it's new moto-scooter concept named 'Project Redux', which comes with features like keyless feature and MorphUI.
