Reliance Industries Ltd won the award to build a 10 GWh battery storage project under the government's production-linked incentive scheme, bolstering India’s push for self-reliance in battery manufacturing.

The Ministry of Heavy Industries on September 4 said the 10 GWh Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) manufacturing scheme had an allocated budget of Rs 3,620 crore and received bids from seven companies, including ACME Cleantech Solutions Pvt Ltd, Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies Pvt Ltd, Anvi Power Industries Pvt Ltd, JSW Neo Energy Ltd, Lucas TVS Ltd, Reliance Industries, and Waaree Energies Ltd.

The five companies that have been placed on a waitlist according to their rankings are ACME Cleantech Solutions, Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies, Waaree Energies, JSW Neo Energy, and Lucas TVS.

As the country’s reliance on renewables grows, storage battery demand is poised to surge because of the intermittency of solar and wind energy. India will also need massive investments in manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure to support the transition to clean energy.

The PLI Scheme for ACC battery storage aims to enhance India's position as a global leader in battery manufacturing.

The government said that after a rigorous evaluation process based on the Quality and Cost-Based Selection (QCBS) mechanism, Reliance Industries emerged as the successful bidder with the highest overall score. The company’s bid was assessed based on combined technical and financial criteria. As a result, Reliance has been awarded the full 10 GWh capacity under the scheme, it said.
