Reliance Industries's electrolyser giga factory is set to be operational by 2026, chairman Mukesh Ambani said at the conglomerate's 47th annual general meeting held on August 29. The factory will aid the oil-to-telcom major in delivering green hydorgen and green fuels at the most economical cost, Ambani said.

"We have began work of the fully automate multi giga watt (GW) electrolyser manufacturing facility on the west coast of India. The factory will be fully adaptable and capable of supporting various technologies such as alkaline, PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolysis, AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane) electrolysis," Ambani said.

Electrolysers are critical components in green hydrogen production, using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Along with Reliance, other major players such as Larsen and Toubro and Tata Steel have also invested in  investing in electrolyser manufacturing.

Reliance  will leverage its  solar and wind energy storage integrated manufacturing ecosystem to set up the electrolyser manufacturing facility, according to the company's website.  The move comes amid the company's target to become Net Carbon Zero by 2035.

Amabani added the company will be building capabilities for future electrolyser-based technologies to tackle challenges in energy efficiency and capital cost reduction

Reliance Industries (RIL) intends to not only make clean energy available but also accessible and affordable, to ensure energy self‑sufficiency for India, Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani had said in the FY24 annual report on August 7. The oil-to-telecom conglomerate is also exploring several technologies to capture and recycle carbon.

The company is also building a giga complex spread over 5,000 acres in Jamnagar in Gujarat, comprising five giga factories for photovoltaic panels, fuel cell system, green hydrogen, energy storage and power electronics. The complex is expected to be commissioned this year.
