Once you've filed your income tax return, you must verify it within 30 days—either electronically or by sending a signed ITR-V form to the Centralized Processing Centre. Verification is just a confirmation of the legitimacy of filing. Processing is when the Income Tax Department checks the details, cross-matches the same with AIS and Form 26AS, and ensures whether refund or demand is payable.

Why processing might be delayed

Even after confirmation, processing takes time. Delays normally occur when reported income and records of the department do not align, when checks are put on large-value transactions or technical backlogs at the processing centre. Cases are sometimes placed for further scrutiny before they can be finalized. Such delay does not imply rejection but implies that the return is being verified.

Refunds and intimation under section 143(1)

After processing is complete, the department issues an intimation under section 143(1). The intimation states whether the return is accepted as filed, refund is due, or tax is due. Until such an intimation is ready, even validated returns are pending. Refund is released only after the processing stage is completed and payment clears through the system.

Checking the status online

Their ITR progress can be monitored by the taxpayers on the e-filing portal for income tax. Log in and go to the "View Returns/Forms" tab and check if the return is pending, under process, or completed. If refunds are taking an unreasonable amount of time, it is advisable to redress a grievance or seek clarification with the department.

Patience and compliance

While processing delays can be frustrating, they are often not uncommon. Verifying that AIS, Form 26AS, and your return filing are in harmony eliminates mismatches causing delays. Tracking departmental communication avoids overlooking requests for additional information. Once processed, the intimation or refund seals the filing cycle.

FAQs

How long does it usually take to process a return?

Most of the verified returns get credited within weeks, but some take three months depending on volume and additional checks.

What if my refund is delayed after verification too?

Refunds are credited only after processing. If it's after three months, you can file a grievance through the income tax portal.

Can a verified return be rejected later?

Yes, where there is a difference upon processing, the refund may be corrections or adjusted. You will be informed by an intimation notice and given time to respond.
