Madhabi Puri Buch has been appointed as the new chairperson of capital markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
Buch is the first-ever woman to head SEBI and has been appointed for a three-year term. The former SEBI Whole Time Member (WTM) was previously nominated to lead a new technology committee set up by the market regulator.

Buch was not only the first woman as WTM of SEBI, but also the first person working at the regulator from the private sector. Starting her career with ICICI Bank, she went on to become the managing director (MD) and CEO at ICICI Securities from February 2009 to May 2011.
In 2011, Buch left for Singapore to join Greater Pacific Capital LLP. She is the Founder-director of Agora Advisory Pvt Ltd. She also served at the New Development Bank in Shanghai for a period of three years.

The former ICICI banker holds a management degree from Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad.
Madhabi Puri succeeds Ajay Tyagi - whose tenure as the SEBI chairman ended today. The finance ministry invited applications in October for the post of chairman and the deadline for submission was December 6.
