The Karnataka government has lifted Value Added Tax on wine, beer and hard liquor. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who also holds the Finance portfolio, announced that measure in his budget speech in the Vidhan Soudha on Wednesday.
Karnataka is also starting a government subsidized chain of food centres similar to the ones in Tamil Nadu. Called the ‘Namma Canteen’ and modeled on Jayalalithaa’s ‘Amma Canteen’, it will sell breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch for Rs 10.
