ONGC has assured Tripura that the 726 MW gas-based thermal power project at Palatana in Gomati district, set up by ONGC—Tripura Power Corporation, would start generation within the next few weeks.

The assurance was given by ONGC chairman Sudhir Vasudeva to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar yesterday in Delhi.

"Vasudeva indicated that commissioning of the first unit might take place in the last week of September, but not later than first week of October," a government official said today.

Tata Chemicals has been shortlisted as the prospective vendor by ONGC and cooperation of the state administration has been sought for starting the work, the official said.

ONGC has also decided to set up a Rs 5000 crore urea fertiliser manufacturing unit at Khobal in North Tripura district.

Khobal has been selected considering its close proximity to the Khobal gas field from where the natural gas would be supplied.

ONGC last year discovered huge gas reserves at Khobal, near the Assam—Agartala National Highway (NH—44), sources in ONGC said.

With the commissioning of the project, urea demand not only for Tripura, but the entire Northeast would be met.

Besides, the fertiliser could  also be exported to neighbouring Bangladesh, the sources said.
