Apple's Taiwanese supplier Pegatron has confirmed a 'spark incident' at the company's Chennai factory on September 24 evening.

In a statement to Moneycontrol, the company said that the incident is currently under control with no injuries, no casualties nor damage to other assets.

"The cause of the accident is currently under investigation by relevant authority, and the incident does not have significant financial or operational impact on Pegatron Corporation," it said.

On September 25, Reuters reported that Pegatron temporarily halted the assembly of iPhone devices following a fire incident. The company cancelled the first two shifts of the day and is yet to inform workers whether it will operate the third shift of the day or not, it said.

Pegatron declined to comment on whether it has halted the assembly of iPhones at its facility.

Pegatron is one of Apple's key iPhone manufacturing partners in India and is currently responsible for 10 percent of the company's annual iPhone production in the country, according to industry estimates.

This development comes at a time when Apple is betting big on India to become a key manufacturing hub in order to diversify its manufacturing capabilities beyond China, thanks in part to incentives provided by the government through its production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones.

The company currently manufactures iPhone devices in India, including the latest iPhone 15, through contract manufacturers such as Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron, with plans to expand into other products such as its wireless headphones AirPods.

Apple plans to increase production in India to over $40 billion in the next 4-5 years, after crossing the $7 billion production mark in the last fiscal, PTI reported on September 24 citing unnamed government officials.
