Your hair needs proper care year-round.  The monsoon season can turn your healthy, lustrous, long hair into frizzy and greasy. Hair care is more important during monsoon as humidity and dampness may trigger problems in the scalp, leading to a number of issues. You may notice flakes on your shoulders or a continues tingling on your scalp during rainy season. These cause discomfort and dishevelment.

High humidity and rainfall provide an apt environment for the growth of fungi and over-production of oil in your scalp. This can result in an imbalance of the natural oils, leading to dandruff and other problems related to the scalp. Dermatologists suggest that moisture in the air can make your scalp oily, which, if trapped, sweats along with bacteria to cause irritation and dandruff. In addition to this, the hair follicles weaken due to constant exposure to rainwater and temperature changes, which can further damage the hair and cause breakage.

Check out these home remedies to combat hair woes during monsoon:

Aloe vera: Aloe vera has soothing and moisturising properties. The presence of natural enzymes in aloe vera helps fight dandruff by promoting a healthy scalp. Massage fresh aloe vera gel into your scalp, leave it on for about 30 minutes, and then wash it off with gentle shampoo. Aloe vera has antifungal properties that work against the yeast-like fungus that leads to dandruff.

Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil has powerful antifungal and antibacterial properties that may help treat dandruff and diseases related to the scalp. Add a few drops of tea tree oil into your regular shampoo, or even dilute with a carrier oil like coconut oil. Massage into the scalp, let it be there for a couple of minutes, and then rinse. This aids in cleansing the scalp and pacifying inflammation.

Lemon juice: Lemon juice balances out the pH of the scalp and washes away the extra oil. Apply freshly squeezed lemon juice to your scalp, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Be careful not to let this sit for too long because lemon juice dries the hair. Regular application results in  healthy scalp, one that is free from dandruff.

Fenugreek seeds: The use of fenugreek seeds in strengthening hair roots and reducing dandruff problems is ancient. Soak fenugreek seeds overnight and grind them into a paste. Apply it on the scalp and let it sit for around 30 minutes before rinsing. Rich in protein and nicotinic acid, fenugreek is most useful in treating dandruff and giving hair a fine texture.

Yoghurt: Yogurt is rich in probiotics that may encourage a good, fit scalp by balancing the flora. Apply plain yogurt directly to your scalp, then leave it for 20-30 minutes before washing off with water. The lactic acid in yogurt aids in exfoliating dead skin cells and soothing irritation.

Coconut oil: It moisturises and lends antimicrobial activity to the scalp, which helps keep dryness and flakiness at bay. Heat some coconut oil, let it warm and massage it into your scalp. Leave it on for a few hours or overnight, then wash it with a mild shampoo. The repeated use may help nourish the scalp and improve hair health.
