Prickly heat, medically known as miliaria, are the tiny, itchy red bumps on the skin's surface. These bumps can appear anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on areas prone to sweating, such as the chest, back, neck, and groin. It is called prickly heat due to a reason; the  sensation is akin to being pricked by needles.

When the body sweats excessively, especially in humid conditions, sweat ducts can become blocked. This blockage traps sweat beneath the skin's surface, leading to inflammation and the characteristic red bumps of prickly heat. The severity of prickly heat can vary, from a mild annoyance to a more intense and persistent discomfort.

Fortunately, there are several effective and easy remedies that can help reduce the symptoms and prevent recurrence. However, always consult a healthcare professional if symptoms persist or worsen.

Follow quick remedies and bid farewell to prickly heat and get rid of discomfort:

Cool compresses: Applying cool compresses to the affected areas can provide immediate relief by soothing the skin and reducing inflammation. Simply soak a clean cloth in cold water, wring out excess water, and gently apply to the affected areas for 10-15 minutes at a time.

Besan bath: Gram flour, also called besan, is known for its soothing properties, which makes  it an excellent remedy for prickly heat. Add besan and milk and make a fine paste.  Apply it for 15-20 minutes and wash with cold water, it may soothe itching and irritation.

Calamine lotion: Calamine lotion contains ingredients like zinc oxide and ferric oxide, which help reduce inflammation and relieve itching. Apply a thin layer of calamine lotion to the affected areas for immediate relief.

Aloe vera gel: Aloe vera is renowned for its cooling and moisturising properties. This makes it an ideal remedy for prickly heat. Apply fresh aloe vera gel to the affected areas to soothe irritation and promote healing.

Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is essential for maintaining proper hydration levels and preventing prickly heat. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.

Wear loose-fitting clothes: Wearing loose-fitting, breathable clothing allows air to circulate freely around the body, reducing the risk of sweat duct blockage and prickly heat.

Avoid heat and humidity: Whenever possible, try to stay in air-conditioned or well-ventilated spaces to minimise sweating and reduce the likelihood of developing prickly heat.
