Every time you step out, the sun seems to settle a little too comfortably on your skin, leaving behind a tan that quickly turns into stubborn dark spots. Add to that the pollution in the air and the unpredictability of the weather, and your skin starts to feel overwhelmed, reacting with irritation, breakouts, or a sudden sensitivity to that new product you thought would work wonders. For those with Indian skin, this isn’t just an occasional issue; it’s a constant challenge. With higher melanin levels and a natural tendency towards hyperpigmentation.

"Indian skin needs more than just a basic routine," suggests Divya Malpani, Founder and CEO at Skinvest. She adds, “It demands sun protection and carefully chosen ingredients that address its unique concerns while keeping it balanced and healthy. Whether it’s about managing oiliness, soothing sensitive areas, or treating pigmentation, the right ingredients can make a significant difference. Understanding your skin's needs is the first step toward creating a routine that helps it thrive.”

Here are 6 skincare ingredients, suggested by Malpani, that tackle pigmentation, oiliness, and sensitivity:

Niacinamide: A versatile ingredient that hydrates skin, regulates sebum production, improves skin texture, and reduces hyperpigmentation.

Salicylic acid: It deeply exfoliates and unclogs pores, prevents and treats breakouts, dissolves blackheads and removes dead skin cells.

Retinol: This vitamin A derivative stimulates cell turnover, fades dark spots, and promotes collagen production. It is also considered best for anti-aging.

Tranexamic acid: Targets melanin production directly and is said to effectively reduce hyperpigmentation.

Lactic acid: The lactic acid present in your skincare product may help gently exfoliate, hydrate, and brighten tanned skin.

Ceramides: These are lipids that form the skin's protective barrier. They help in preventing moisture loss and provide protection against external aggressors like pollution and harsh weather.

Always consult a dermatologist or skincare professional before introducing new ingredients into your routine to ensure they are suitable for your skin type and concerns.
