Have you ever noticed how certain spaces just feel right? It’s because thoughtful furniture arrangement can transform your home into a warm, comfortable haven that is perfect for spending quality time with loved ones. Whether you’re aiming for intimacy, balance, or visual interest, there’s a layout that suits your needs.

When it comes to making your home both functional and welcoming, the layout of your furniture plays a vital role, says architect Sonali Bhagwati, Founder and Principal Architect at Designplus Architecture. “The right furniture layout not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also boosts the comfort level of your home, creating an environment where people feel at ease and at home,” she says.

Here are expert tips from Bhagwati on how to arrange furniture in your house for maximum comfort and style:

  • Arranging around the focal point: Every room has a natural focal point; be it a fireplace, a beautiful artwork, or a coffee table. Arranging furniture around this central element naturally draws people’s attention and encourages interaction. In your living room, place sofas around the focal point to enhance the feeling of togetherness and create a space that feels inviting and intimate.

  • The diagonal layout: Looking to add some dimension to your space? Try a diagonal layout. Even just one piece of furniture, like a sofa or a chair, placed at an angle can break the monotony of traditional arrangements. It adds visual interest and creates a more dynamic flow in the room. Pairing this with a unique coffee table or side chair will further elevate the design.

  • Opt for a symmetrical arrangement: For a clean, balanced look, consider a symmetrical arrangement. This layout works particularly well in formal living rooms where you want to make a strong, visually appealing statement. Place key furniture pieces, like the sofa or chairs, facing each other or flanking a central feature, such as a fireplace, to create an even, harmonious atmosphere.

  • Impact of accent tables: Sometimes, it’s the small things that make the biggest difference. Accent tables like side tables, coffee tables, or console tables, serve both a functional and aesthetic purpose. Their placement can help define zones, provide convenient surfaces for drinks or decor, and rev up the design without overwhelming the space.

  • Focus on floowing: Flooring might not always be the first thing you think of when arranging furniture, but it’s just as important. A rug can define a seating area and tie the furniture together. Choose a rug that complements the colour scheme and size of the room, ensuring that it brings the entire space into harmony while adding warmth and texture.

  • Zoning for distinct activities: Sometimes, a room serves multiple purposes. You can create different zones within a single room by arranging furniture strategically. For instance, armchairs can be placed in corners to create a comfortable reading nook, while the main seating area stays open for larger gatherings. This zoning allows for flexibility and ensures everyone has a comfortable space to relax.
  • Floating furniture: If you want to encourage conversation and make the room feel more dynamic, consider a floating furniture arrangement. Positioning your furniture in the center of the room, rather than pushing everything against the walls, creates an intimate atmosphere. A large coffee table and a rug in the centre help anchor the space, while facing chairs and sofas promote interaction.
