Holi, the festival of colours, is a cherished time for celebration and joy. However, the very colours that define this festival can pose a challenge to your skin's health if you are not careful. The synthetic dyes often used during Holi contain chemicals that can lead to skin irritation, dryness, or allergic reactions.
By incorporating a few simple yet effective practices, you can revel in the festive spirit without risking your skin health. From pre-Holi preparations to post-celebration care, these tips, by Dr Chytra Anand, Dermatologist, Founder - SkinQ & Kosmoderma Clinics, will help you protect your skin and maintain its health and radiance.
Pre-Holi skincare
Start your skincare preparations well in advance. Moisturise your skin with a ceramide and hyaluronic acid lotion or cream to create a barrier against the harsh colours. This helps in preventing direct contact between the colours and your skin, reducing the chances of irritation.
Keep yourself hydrated
Staying hydrated is crucial for healthy skin. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to Holi to keep your skin well-hydrated. Drinking enough water is key to maintaining the skin's elasticity and preventing dryness caused by exposure to colours.
Oil up
Apply a generous amount of coconut oil, olive oil, or any non-comedogenic oil on your hair before stepping out to play Holi. This acts as a protective layer, making it easier to wash off the colours later and preventing them from seeping into your Scalp.
Cover up
Wear full-sleeved clothing to minimise direct contact between colours and your skin. Additionally, don a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield your face from colour splashes and harmful UV rays. And use a sunscreen that is broad spectrum and water resistant.
Choose skin-friendly colours
Opt for natural or herbal colours that are gentle on the skin. These are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions compared to synthetic ones, ensuring a safer and healthier Holi celebration.
Post-Holi cleanup
After the festivities, resist the urge to scrub vigorously. Instead, use a Ph balanced cleanser to wash off the colours gently. Avoid hot water, as it can strip your skin of essential oils. Moisturise your skin immediately after cleansing to replenish lost moisture.
Go gentle
To remove stubborn colours, turn to gentle remedies. A mixture of yogurt and gram flour can be used as a gentle scrub, helping to eliminate colours without causing skin irritation.
The day after Holi, limit your actives in the skincare, especially if you have any lingering colour on your skin. If you experience any persistent skin issues after Holi, such as redness, itching, or irritation, consult a dermatologist for personalised advice and treatment.
