Global Recycling Day: History, significance and why it matters

Global Recycling Day serves as a reminder that our planet's resources are finite, and it is our responsibility to protect them. By making conscious efforts to recycle, we can contribute to a cleaner, greener world for future generations.

Every year on March 18, the world comes together to observe Global Recycling Day, a movement dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of recycling and its role in protecting our planet. Recycling is not just about managing waste—it is about conserving resources, reducing pollution and moving towards a sustainable future.

History behind the day

Global Recycling Day was established in 2018 by the Global Recycling Foundation to highlight the need to see recyclables as the Seventh Resource, alongside natural resources like water, air, coal, oil, natural gas and minerals. The day aims to emphasise how recycling can combat climate change and promote a circular economy, where waste is minimised, and resources are reused efficiently.

The initiative gained support from environmental organisations, governments, businesses and individuals worldwide. Since its inception, Global Recycling Day has encouraged people to rethink waste and adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives.

Significance of recycling

Recycling plays a crucial role in preserving the environment and reducing our carbon footprint. Here's why it matters:

Reduces pollution: Recycling helps cut down on landfill waste, preventing toxic chemicals from contaminating soil and water. It also reduces air pollution by minimising the need for incineration.

Conserves natural resources: By recycling materials like paper, plastic, glass and metals, we reduce the demand for raw materials, helping preserve forests, water sources and energy reserves.

Fights climate change: The production of new materials releases greenhouse gases. Recycling reduces emissions by lowering the need for energy-intensive manufacturing processes.

Promotes circular economy: Instead of following the traditional 'take, make, dispose' mode, recycling supports a sustainable 'reduce, reuse, recycle' approach, keeping materials in use for as long as possible.

Creates jobs: The recycling industry generates employment opportunities in waste management, material recovery and eco-friendly product development.
