Red, inflamed pimples on your shoulders and back are unwelcome blemishes that can be painful, itchy, and frustrating. Known as bacne, or back acne, these breakouts can make you self-conscious and uncomfortable. Managing bacne is crucial not only for aesthetic reasons but also to prevent potential scarring and discomfort.

Bacne is caused by several factors similar to facial acne. These include:

Excess oil production: The skin on the back has numerous sebaceous glands that produce sebum, an oily substance. Overproduction of sebum can clog pores and lead to acne.

Bacteria: Propionibacterium acnes, a bacterium naturally found on the skin, can grow inside clogged pores, leading to inflammation and pimples.

Dead skin cells: When dead skin cells aren't properly shed, they can accumulate and clog pores, contributing to acne formation.

Sweat: Excessive sweating, especially during exercise, can exacerbate bacne. Sweat can mix with oils and toxins on the skin, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.

Friction: Tight clothing or heavy backpacks can cause friction and irritation, leading to mechanical acne.

Hormonal changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during puberty, menstruation, or stress, can trigger increased oil production, leading to bacne.

Diet and lifestyle: A diet high in refined sugars and dairy, as well as lifestyle factors like stress and poor hygiene, can contribute to acne.

To effectively combat and prevent bacne, consider the following remedies:

Avoid certain creams and oils: Heavy lotions and oils can clog pores and aggravate bacne. Choose non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) and oil-free products for your back.

Choose breathable fabrics: Wear for loose, breathable fabrics like cotton to reduce friction and allow your skin to breathe. This minimises the buildup of sweat and oil on your skin, preventing pore blockages.

Exfoliate regularly: Gentle exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells that can clog pores. Use a soft brush or an exfoliating scrub once or twice a week. However, avoid over-exfoliating, as it can irritate the skin and worsen acne.

Maintain a healthy diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins supports overall skin health. Some studies suggest that reducing high-glycemic foods and dairy may improve acne for some people.

Shower after sweating: Sweat can exacerbate acne by trapping dirt and bacteria on your skin.  According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), showering as soon as possible after sweating heavily, such as after a workout, to keep pores clear.

Use salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide washes: Salicylic acid helps exfoliate the skin and clear clogged pores, while benzoyl peroxide targets acne-causing bacteria, suggests AAD. Include a body wash containing these ingredients into your daily shower routine.

Visit a dermatologist: If over-the-counter treatments aren't effective, consult a dermatologist. They can prescribe stronger topical treatments, oral medications, or other therapies such as light therapy or chemical peels tailored to your specific needs.
