Dry scalp in children is a common concern for many parents. The constant itching, flaking, and discomfort can cause irritation and unrest. While environmental factors such as extreme weather conditions, pollution, or air conditioning can worsen dryness, the root causes often lie in poor hydration, malnutrition, or an imbalance in the body’s natural systems.
Overuse of chemical-based shampoos and hair products can also strip away essential scalp oils, leading to increased irritation, says Dr Swathi Ramamurthy, Head of R&D at Herby Angel. “While many over-the-counter solutions promise quick relief, Ayurveda offers time-tested, holistic remedies that nourish and restore scalp health. Unlike conventional treatments that often provide temporary relief, Ayurvedic remedies work at the root level by restoring balance and strengthening the scalp’s natural defences,” she explains.
Dr Ramamurthy suggests these Ayurvedic solutions to keep your child’s scalp healthy and hydrated:

Oil massage: A gentle oil massage is one of the most effective Ayurvedic remedies for dry scalp. “Warm natural oils like sesame, coconut, or almond oil deeply moisturise the scalp while also boosting circulation and promoting hair growth. Adding a few drops of neem or Brahmi oil provides antimicrobial and soothing effects," suggests Dr Ramamurthy. She adds that a gentle scalp massage not only nourishes the scalp but also calms the nervous system, making it an excellent bedtime ritual for children. "Massage for five to ten minutes, then wash off with a mild herbal shampoo," she adds.
Herbal hair rinse: Opt for natural Ayurvedic hair rinses to hydrate and strengthen the scalp. Soaked fenugreek (methi) seeds or an infusion of hibiscus leaves can act as natural conditioners, preventing excessive dryness. Amla (Indian gooseberry) rinses are also beneficial, as they strengthen hair roots and help maintain scalp moisture.
Aloe vera magic: Aloe vera is rich in vitamins and enzymes that soothe an irritated scalp. Applying fresh aloe vera gel 15 to 20 minutes before washing can calm inflammation and lock in hydration. “Aloe vera is particularly effective for children’s sensitive scalps as it reduces irritation while providing deep nourishment,” says Dr Ramamurthy.

Balanced diet: According to Ayurveda, internal imbalances often cause skin and scalp issues. Consuming a well-balanced diet that includes ghee, nuts, seeds, and fresh fruits can help maintain scalp hydration. “A warm glass of milk with turmeric before bedtime can be particularly beneficial in strengthening hair and skin from within. Reducing the intake of processed and salty foods also prevents dehydration and irritation,” Dr Ramamurthy suggests.
Avoid harsh products: Many shampoos contain sulfates and harsh detergents that strip away natural scalp oils, making dryness worse. “Instead, opt for herbal shampoos with Shikakai, Reetha, and Bhringraj, which cleanse gently without over-drying the scalp,” she says.
