World Cerebral Palsy Day: Expert busts common myths about cerebral palsy treatment and recovery

Doctors say the first step to inclusion is awareness. By debunking the myths and concentrating on ability as opposed to disability, society can open up opportunities for education, employment, and emotional happiness of those with CP. Families need to know the facts, so they can make their children everything they can be.

Like many types of disabilities, cerebral palsy (CP) is among the most common neurological disorders in childhood yet misunderstood by most. CP affects body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the brain—a condition that can occur during foetal development (before birth), during child birth or after birth.

Since cerebral palsy is not something that can be cured, people diagnosed with the condition must learn to live and deal with it. With the early implementation, regular treatment and the possibility of using modern medical technology as well, many children and adults with CP are doing well and they study, work or help society.

But myths and misunderstandings about CP still colour people’s perceptions of those who live with it. Some think that CP is a degenerative disease or people with the disorder are unable to walk, speak or live independently. The form of CP varies greatly—some may have slight motor issues, some may have severe motion and (or) speech challenges. Dispelling myths about cerebral palsy is vital to promoting empathy, inclusion and support for those with the condition.

Dr Satwik Kumar, neurorehabilitation physician at HopeBridge Neurology Centre in Faridabad, tells Moneycontrol: “Cerebral palsy does not get worse with age — it is a static condition. What evolves over time is the needs of a person and their opportunity to grow. Individuals with CP can have full and independent lives through therapy, technology and community support."

Myth 1: Cerebral Palsy Is a Disease That Worsens Over Time

Fact: CP is not degenerative. The brain injury responsible for it does not get worse over time. But without treatment, muscle stiffness or joint issues could arise from lack of movement — problems that can be controlled with physiotherapy and exercise.

Myth 2: Individuals with Cerebral Palsy are Unable to Live Independently

Fact: Most people with mild to moderate CP are independent and active individuals. With the help of mobility aids, adaptive equipment and job training, adults with CP go to work, socialize and enjoy their favourite pastimes — just like other people.

Myth 3: CP Only Affects Movement

Fact: Although CP is a condition that primarily affects motor skills, some individuals may have associated issues such as speech impairment or learning disabilities. These go across the board, and there are a lot of people with CP who have average intelligence and cognitive levels.

Myth 4: We Can Do Nothing

Truth: The difference is early intervention. Mobility and confidence may be greatly enhanced with physical, occupational and speech therapies as well as modern robotic rehabilitation modalities.

In short, cerebral palsy is not what makes up a person — it’s just one piece of them. By smashing stereotypes and championing inclusion, we can be part of a world where any and all with CP have the chance to thrive far beyond their diagnosis.
