A cough that lasts more than three weeks is your body’s alarm bell—don’t dismiss it as just weather or pollution. Timely medical care can prevent serious complications.

A cough that simply lasts for weeks is often dismissed, blamed on the weather, pollution, or an old cold. But doctors now caution that such symptoms may warrant closer attention. While most coughs are benign and resolve on their own, or with home remedies, a persistent one could indicate underlying health conditions ranging from asthma to chronic lung disease.

Some coughs can get worse with time. The danger lies in delay, says Dr Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram. “A persistent cough isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s your body’s way of alerting you. Often patients come after weeks of self-medicating,” Dr Grover explains. “By the time they see a specialist, the condition may have progressed”, he adds. Timely intervention not only prevents complications but can improve quality of life. Especially after the pandemic, a cough may no longer be ‘just a cold.’

Dr Grover shares 7 reasons you must not ignore a lingering cough:

An infection needing treatment: Not every cough is viral. “In cases of pneumonia or tuberculosis, delayed care can worsen the outcome,” warns Dr Grover. Immediate antibiotics or intervention may be necessary.

Related to asthma or allergies: Chronic coughs may reflect conditions like allergic bronchitis or asthma. Early diagnosis helps avoid long-term lung damage.

Can be acid reflux: GERD is often missed. “Patients may not even feel heartburn, yet suffer chronic cough,” Dr Grover adds.

Signal chronic lung disease: Conditions like COPD start subtly. A lingering cough may be the first—and only—sign for months.

Smoking is red flag: Smokers and ex-smokers should treat a chronic cough seriously. “It could be an early sign of lung cancer,” says Dr Grover.

It may be post-viral or post-COVID: Coughs after infections like COVID-19 may persist due to inflammation. Don't ignore if it lasts beyond weeks.

Preventing future problems: A simple chest X-ray or pulmonary test can reveal the root cause. “Three weeks is the cut-off,” says Dr Grover. “Beyond that, don’t delay.”
