Think the end of monsoon means the end of that stubborn itch? Not really. Fungi love warm, damp environments, which are still common in the post-monsoon transition. Even after the rain, sweaty skin, damp shoes, or clothes that haven’t dried properly create the ideal conditions for fungal growth.

"Areas like the groin, underarms, under the breasts, and feet are especially vulnerable,” Dr Shareefa Chause, a Mumbai-based dermatologist, tells Moneycontrol. “Unfortunately, most people ignore the first signs, thinking it’s ‘just a rash’. But left untreated, that rash can become a repeat offender,” she adds.

How to manage fungal skin allergies

Dr Chause suggests the following foolproof tips to prevent and manage fungal skin allergies:

  • Keep skin completely dry: “Moisture is your skin’s worst enemy in this season,” says Dr Chause. Always pat your skin dry after a shower, and change out of sweaty clothes immediately — especially after workouts or long commutes.

  • Choose breathable cotton fabrics:Avoid synthetic materials like nylon or polyester. “Cotton allows your skin to breathe and stays drier for longer,” she adds. Loose, airy clothing also reduces skin-to-skin friction, another trigger for fungal flare-ups.

  • Don’t share personal items: It may sound basic, but many people still share towels, socks, or combs at home. “That’s one of the fastest ways to spread infection — even if no one looks ‘sick’,” Dr Chause warns.

  • Use antifungal powder or cream early: If you notice itching, don’t wait. “Apply a medically-approved antifungal powder or creamat the first sign,” she recommends. If symptoms last more than a few days, it’s best to visit a dermatologist instead of self-treating for weeks.

  • Boost your immune health: Your skin’s health starts inside. “A balanced diet with fresh fruits, vegetables, and enough water supports your body’s defence against infections,” says Dr Chause. Good sleep and low stress levels help, too.

Stay ahead of the itch:

The rain may have gone, but the skin problems it leaves behind can stick around for weeks. The good news? With a few simple lifestyle changes, you can protect your skin from post-monsoon flare-ups. “Treat fungal infections early and seriously. It’s easier to fix now than after it spreads or returns,” says Dr Chause. So keep drying off, dressing smart, and don’t ignore the itch — your skin will thank you.
