Postpartum care: 8 things every new mom should know, from emotional recovery to breastfeeding, more

Motherhood is powerful, but it’s also demanding. As you care for your baby, remember to care for yourself, too. Here’s why prioritising your health during the postpartum period is essential.

While most of the attention during pregnancy focuses on labour and delivery, the weeks that follow childbirth are equally important for a new mother's health and well-being. Recovery, both emotional and physical, doesn’t follow a set timeline. Therefore, understanding the importance of this period can help women feel more prepared, and supported as they experience life with their newborn.

Postpartum care is more than just physical healing, says Dr Alka Chaudhary, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital and Rosewalk Hospital, Delhi. “The postpartum period, also known as the fourth trimester, involves more than just bodily recovery. It’s a time of major hormonal, emotional, and lifestyle changes. During this time the mother’s body is in the process of healing, learning to nourish a baby, and adjusting to a completely new lifestyle, all at once,” she says.

From dealing with breastfeeding struggles, managing sleep deprivation, or coping with unexpected emotions, postpartum care should be proactive, compassionate, and holistic, says Dr Chaudhary.

Can awareness and support make all the difference? Dr Chaudhary stresses that many women downplay their discomfort or assume their challenges are just something to get through. “But that doesn’t have to be the case. With the right, medical, emotional, and social support, this phase can be smoother and less overwhelming. Knowing what to expect, where to seek help, and how to prioritise self-care can empower mothers to thrive in this transformative phase,” she says.

Dr Choudhury suggest 8 important aspects every new mom should keep in mind after delivery:

  • Recovery takes time:Postpartum healing, after both vaginal or C-section delivery, is a gradual process. “Expect vaginal bleeding, uterine cramping, soreness, or incision tenderness. Give yourself permission to rest, recover, and heal at your own pace, without guilt or pressure,” she says.

  • Know when to seek medical help: Some postpartum symptoms need immediate medical attention. Dr Chaudhary cautions against excessive bleeding, high fever, foul-smelling discharge, chest pain, or emotional distress. “These could indicate infections or complications that need prompt treatment,” she says.

  • Emotional wellness is important: Feeling emotional is normal, however, persistent sadness, anxiety, or disconnection could signal postpartum depression. “Mental health is just as important as physical recovery. Seek professional help without hesitation, it’s a sign of strength, not weakness,” Dr Chaudhary informs.

  • Prioritise rest when you can: Sleep might be fragmented, but rest is essential. “Even short naps during the day can help your body recover. Accept help from family or friends so you can catch a break when possible,” Dr Chaudhary advises.

  • Fuel your body with the right nutrition: Nutritious meals support healing, energy, and milk production. Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, and fresh produce. “Don’t forget to hydrate well, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Continuing prenatal vitamins can also aid in recovery,” says Dr Chaudhary.

  • Don’t overlook pelvic floor recovery: Childbirth can weaken pelvic muscles, causing discomfort or bladder issues. Pelvic floor exercises like Kegels can help. “If you’re facing symptoms, talk to your doctor, they may refer you to a pelvic health physiotherapist,” Dr Chaudhary suggests.

  • Breastfeeding isn’t always smooth: Latching issues, nipple pain, or low milk supply are common. She recommends seeing a lactation expert early. “What matters most is that your baby is well-fed, whether through breast milk or formula,” she says.

  • Stay connected with your doctor: The six-week postpartum check is important, but not the only time to check in. Dr Chaudhary encourages new moms to reach out any time they have concerns about healing, mental health, family planning, or physical changes.
