The postpartum phase, lasting 6-8 weeks after birth, is a crucial period when the body undergoes significant changes to return to its pre-pregnant state. This phase involves numerous hormonal adjustments that can lead to both physical and emotional shifts for new mothers. While this time is filled with the joy of welcoming a new baby, it also presents various challenges. New mothers often find themselves balancing the demands of their newborn with their own recovery. It is essential for mothers to prioritise their well-being during this transformative period to ensure a healthy and smooth transition.
Recognising the importance of self-care and understanding the common experiences during the postpartum phase can help in navigating this time effectively. Here are some vital dos and don’ts for first-time mothers to keep in mind as they embark on this journey, focusing on maintaining their health and well-being while caring for their new baby.
Here are some essential dos and don’ts for first-time mothers during this transformative period suggested by Dr Sonia Golani, consultant gynaecologist and obstetrician, Bhailal Amin General hospital, Vadodara.
Dos for first time mothers in the postpartum phase
Immediate postpartum: If you had a vaginal delivery with episiotomy, you may experience pain and soreness so taking good perineal care by keeping the stitches clean and antibiotics will help in easing the pain. If you had a caesarean delivery, you may experience pain in lower abdomen which can be treated by pain medication. Maintain a healthy diet consisting of protein and carbohydrates and fibre rich foods, eat on time and use stool softeners to prevent constipation
Prioritise self-care: Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. Take time for yourself, whether it’s a warm bath, a short walk, or a moment of meditation. Self-care is essential for your physical and mental well-being.
Accept help: Don't be afraid to lean on your support system. Whether it's your partner, family, or friends, accept their offers to help with chores, meals, or simply holding the baby while you rest.
Stay hydrated and nourished: It's easy to forget about your own needs when caring for a newborn, but staying hydrated and eating nutritious meals is vital for your recovery and energy levels.
Rest when you can: Sleep deprivation is common for new mothers but try to rest whenever possible. Nap when the baby naps, and don't worry about the household chores. Your body needs time to heal.
Connect with other mothers: Joining a new mothers' group or online community can provide valuable support and camaraderie. Sharing experiences with others who are going through similar challenges can be incredibly comforting.
Communicate with your partner: Open communication is key during this transition period. Express your needs and concerns to your partner and work together to navigate the challenges of parenthood as a team.
Don'ts for first time mothers in the postpartum phase
Don’t overexert yourself: Avoid the temptation to do too much too soon. Your body needs time to recover from childbirth, so resist the urge to jump back into your pre-pregnancy routine right away.
Don’t compare yourself to others: Every mother and baby is unique, so resist the urge to compare your postpartum journey to others'. Trust your instincts and do what feels right for you and your baby.
Don’t neglect your emotional health: Postpartum mood disorders, such as postpartum depression and anxiety, are common and treatable. If you're experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness, don't hesitate to seek help from a healthcare professional.
Don’t isolate yourself: While it's important to prioritize rest and bonding with your baby, isolation can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and overwhelm. Try to stay connected with loved ones, even if it's just a quick phone call or text.
Ignore warning signs: Pay attention to your body and seek medical attention if you experience any concerning symptoms, such as excessive bleeding, severe pain, or signs of infection. Your health and well-being are paramount.
Don’t fail to use birth control: Discuss with your obstetrician about the options available and choose the one which best suits you.
Don’t smoke: Even your partner should not smoke as this is harmful for your newborn baby.
Don’t feel guilty: Motherhood is full of highs and lows, and it's okay to feel a range of emotions. Give yourself permission to experience and process your feelings without judgment or guilt.
Navigating the postpartum phase as a first-time mother can be daunting but remember that you're not alone. By prioritising self-care, seeking support, and being gentle with yourself, you can navigate this transformative journey with confidence and grace. This is a period of learning for you and your family so take it easy and adjust slowly and enjoy the journey without stressing yourself.
