Night owls more prone to depression and anxiety, here's why

Are you an early bird or a night owl? If you are the latter, there's a reason to worry! A recent study suggests that night owls may be prone to depression. Here’s why aligning sleep patterns with natural circadian rhythms and adopting healthier lifestyle choices is important to reduce the risk of depression.

Do you rise with the sun, sipping your hot cup of tea while enjoying the company of chirping birds? You are probably an early bird, waking up fresh and active. On the other hand, if you don't greet the sun until late and love to be buried in your bed, groggy from staying up late studying, reading, working or binge watching your favourite OTT series, then hello night owl! You come alive when the world winds down.

If you are a night owl, then waking up groggy and struggling to align with the 9 to 5 routine aren't your only challenges. There’s more to it: you may also be at a higher risk of depression compared to the early bird. A recent study from the University of Surrey, published in PLOS One, sheds light on why night owls, those who prefer staying up late, might be at a higher risk of depression compared to early risers.

The research surveyed 546 university students, examining their sleep patterns, mindfulness levels, rumination habits, and alcohol consumption. The findings suggest that certain lifestyle factors associated with late-night habits could contribute to increased depressive symptoms. Here are 6 key reasons why night owls may be more susceptible to depression:

  • Poor sleep quality: Staying up late often leads to inadequate or disrupted sleep. The study found that evening chronotypes generally experience poorer sleep quality, which is closely linked to higher levels of depression.

  • Lower mindfulness levels: Night owls tend to have lower levels of mindfulness, particularly in 'acting with awareness' and 'describing' their experiences. This lack of mindfulness can make them more vulnerable to negative thought patterns associated with depression.

  • Increased rumination: The tendency to dwell on negative thoughts, known as rumination, was found to be higher among evening types. This habit can increase depressive symptoms over time.

  • Higher alcohol consumption: The research indicated that night owls are more likely to consume alcohol, which can negatively affect mood and sleep quality, contributing to depression.

  • Misalignment with social schedules: Night owls often find their natural sleep patterns at odds with societal norms, leading to social jetlag. This misalignment can result in chronic sleep deprivation and mood disturbances.

  • Reduced exposure to natural light: Late sleepers may miss out on morning sunlight, which is extremely important for regulating circadian rhythms and mood stabilisation.
