Gut inflammation, also known as intestinal inflammation, occurs when the digestive tract's lining becomes irritated and swollen. It can be caused by various factors, including infections, autoimmune diseases, food intolerances, or chronic conditions like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. This inflammation disrupts normal gut function and can lead to a range of symptoms.

Common signs of gut inflammation include abdominal pain, cramping, and bloating. You might also experience diarrhea or constipation, which can be accompanied by mucus or blood in the stool. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. In chronic cases, individuals may notice unintended weight loss, decreased appetite, and overall digestive discomfort.

Persistent gut inflammation can lead to complications such as nutrient deficiencies and damage to the intestinal lining, emphasising the importance of seeking medical advice for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Here are some home remedies that can help soothe gut inflammation, suggested by Dr Shashank Kumar, gastroenterologist at Delhi’s Felix Hospital.

Turmeric: Turmeric contains curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory compound that helps reduce gut inflammation. Consuming turmeric in food, or as a supplement with black pepper, can enhance its absorption and provide soothing relief to the digestive tract.

Ginger: Ginger has natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Drinking ginger tea, made by boiling fresh ginger, can alleviate inflammation and discomfort in the gut, promoting better digestion and reducing symptoms like bloating.

Aloe vera juice: Aloe vera juice is known for its soothing effects on the digestive system. Drinking a small amount of pure aloe vera juice can help reduce inflammation and provide relief from gut irritation, promoting overall gut health.

Peppermint tea: Peppermint tea contains menthol, which has antispasmodic properties that help relax the digestive tract and ease inflammation. Drinking peppermint tea after meals can alleviate symptoms like bloating and cramping, promoting a calmer digestive experience.

Probiotic-rich foods: Foods like yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi are rich in probiotics, beneficial bacteria that support gut health. Including these in your diet helps balance gut flora, reducing inflammation and improving digestion and overall gut function.

Slippery elm: Slippery elm contains mucilage, which coats and soothes the digestive tract. Mixing slippery elm powder with water creates a soothing drink that helps reduce inflammation and irritation in the gut lining, aiding in digestive comfort.

Chamomile tea: Chamomile tea has anti-inflammatory and calming effects that can soothe an inflamed gut. Drinking chamomile tea helps relax the digestive system, reducing inflammation and providing relief from discomfort and digestive issues.

Fennel seeds: Fennel seeds contain compounds that help reduce bloating and inflammation. Chewing fennel seeds or drinking fennel tea can aid digestion, soothe the gut, and alleviate discomfort caused by inflammation and gas.

Bone broth: Bone broth is rich in collagen and amino acids, which support gut health and help heal the gut lining. Consuming bone broth can reduce inflammation, improve digestion, and provide essential nutrients for maintaining a healthy gut.

Oatmeal: Oatmeal is gentle on the stomach and helps soothe an inflamed gut. Its soluble fiber can reduce inflammation, improve digestion, and provide a comforting, easy-to-digest meal that supports overall gut health.
