Your head is pounding, and despite stretching, you can't shake off the deep tiredness in your body. Your mouth feels dry, and just a sip of water seems like a lifesaver. These are your body’s way of begging for water.

When your body loses more fluids than it takes in, leading to a deficiency of water and essential electrolytes, it is dehydration. It can happen quickly in extreme heat, during intense exercise, or over time if you consistently don’t drink enough water.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dehydration can be caused by a variety of factors including diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating, or simply not consuming enough fluids. Symptoms of dehydration range from mild to severe and may include dry mouth, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and in extreme cases, confusion or unconsciousness.

Here are 5 problems caused by dehydration, and reasons why drinking sufficient water is vital:

Kidney stones: Dehydration reduces urine output, leading to concentrated urine, which can form kidney stones. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out the minerals and toxins that cause these painful stones.

Heatstroke: Without enough water, your body struggles to cool itself through sweating, increasing the risk of heatstroke. Staying hydrated is essential to regulate body temperature and prevent heat-related illnesses.

Digestive problems: Water is key to digestion and nutrient absorption. Dehydration can lead to constipation and digestive discomfort. Adequate water intake ensures smooth digestion and regular bowel movements.

Skin issues: Dehydration affects skin elasticity and moisture levels, leading to dry, flaky skin. Drinking enough water keeps your skin hydrated, promoting a healthy, glowing complexion.

Cognitive impairment: Even mild dehydration can affect concentration and memory. Water is vital for brain function, and staying hydrated improves mental clarity and focus.
