Milk is a nutritious beverage that offers a multitude of health benefits. Rich in calcium, it strengthens bones and teeth, crucial for overall skeletal health and prevention of osteoporosis. Protein in milk aids in muscle repair and growth, supporting an active lifestyle. Vitamins like B12 promote nerve function and energy production, while riboflavin (B2) contributes to healthy skin.

Furthermore, its phosphorus content supports kidney function and ensures proper utilisation of carbohydrates and fats. Whether enjoyed plain or as part of cereals, smoothies, or desserts, milk remains a versatile and valuable addition to a balanced diet, offering essential nutrients for overall health and well-being.

Consuming milk on an empty stomach can have both pros and cons, depending on individual tolerance and health conditions. Here are some points to consider as suggested by Noida- based nutritionist Radha Mehta.

Pros

Nutrient-rich: Milk is a good source of essential nutrients like calcium, protein, vitamins (such as B12), and minerals (like phosphorus), which are beneficial for overall health.

Hydration: Milk is mostly composed of water and can help hydrate the body, especially after waking up in the morning.

Protein source: Milk provides a source of high-quality protein, which is important for muscle repair and growth.

Digestion aid: Some people find that consuming milk on an empty stomach can help soothe stomach acidity or provide relief from acid reflux symptoms. The fat content in milk can also help coat the stomach lining, potentially reducing irritation.

Satiety: Drinking milk can provide a feeling of fullness, which may help control appetite and prevent overeating later in the day.

Cons

Digestive discomfort: For some individuals, especially those with lactose intolerance or sensitivity to dairy products, drinking milk on an empty stomach can lead to digestive discomfort such as bloating, gas, or diarrhoea.

Acidic reactions: Milk is slightly acidic and consuming it on an empty stomach may increase acid production in some people, potentially exacerbating symptoms of acid reflux or gastritis.

Nutrient absorption: Drinking milk alone on an empty stomach may hinder the absorption of certain medications or nutrients, such as iron, due to its calcium content.

Weight gain: Milk can be calorically dense, especially whole milk, and consuming it regularly on an empty stomach without considering overall calorie intake may contribute to weight gain over time.

Allergies: In rare cases, individuals may have allergies to proteins in milk (such as casein or whey), leading to allergic reactions if consumed on an empty stomach.

Whether consuming milk on an empty stomach is beneficial or not depends largely on individual tolerance, preferences, and health conditions.
