Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne illness caused by the dengue virus, has become a significant health concern in many parts of the world. This year, the cases of pre-monsoon dengue are on a rise in India, especially in the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. With its potential to cause severe flu-like symptoms and, in some cases, life-threatening complications, it is essential to take proactive measures to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Here are some effective tips to prevent dengue:

Eliminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes

Mosquitoes that spread dengue breed in stagnant water. Regularly inspect your home and surroundings for any containers or areas where water can accumulate. Common breeding sites include flowerpots, clogged gutters, old tyres, and even pet water bowls. Empty and clean these containers at least once a week. Ensure that water tanks and containers are tightly covered to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs.

Use mosquito repellents

Applying mosquito repellent on exposed skin and clothing is one of the most effective ways to prevent mosquito bites. Look for repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, as these ingredients are proven to be effective against mosquitoes. Reapply the repellent according to the product’s instructions, especially if you are sweating or after swimming.

Wear protective clothing

When possible, wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, socks, and shoes, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Choose light-coloured clothing, as mosquitoes are more attracted to dark colours. Additionally, consider treating your clothes with permethrin, an insect repellent for clothing and gear that can provide added protection.

Install mosquito nets and screens

Using mosquito nets while sleeping can significantly reduce the risk of being bitten, especially in areas with high mosquito activity. Ensure that the net is free from holes and securely tucked under the mattress. Installing mesh screens on windows and doors can also prevent mosquitoes from entering your home. Regularly check and repair any tears or gaps in the screens.

Utilise mosquito traps and larvicides

Mosquito traps can help reduce the mosquito population around your home. These devices attract mosquitoes and then trap or kill them. Larvicides, which are chemicals that kill mosquito larvae, can be applied to water sources that cannot be drained. These measures can help control the mosquito population at the source.

Keep your surroundings clean

Maintaining a clean environment can help reduce the number of mosquito breeding sites. Ensure that rubbish is properly disposed of and that there are no discarded containers that can collect water. Regularly clean and maintain gardens and outdoor areas to prevent water from accumulating in plant saucers, tree holes, or other potential breeding sites.

Stay informed during outbreaks

During dengue outbreaks, stay informed about the latest news and advisories from health authorities. Follow any additional guidelines or recommendations they provide to protect yourself and your community. Public health campaigns often include information on mosquito control measures and updates on affected areas.

Encourage community participation

Dengue prevention requires community effort. Encourage your neighbours and community to participate in clean-up drives and mosquito control activities. Educating others about the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites and using protective measures can help reduce the overall risk of dengue in your area.

Be cautious while travelling

If you are travelling to a region known for dengue outbreaks, take extra precautions. Use mosquito repellents, wear protective clothing, and stay in accommodations with good mosquito control measures such as air conditioning, screened windows, and bed nets. Be vigilant about avoiding mosquito bites during your stay.

Know the symptoms and seek medical attention

Understanding the symptoms of dengue can help in early detection and treatment. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding. If you experience any of these symptoms after being bitten by a mosquito, seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and proper medical care can prevent severe complications.
