One of the most significant figures in contemporary Telugu cinema, Vijay Deverakonda, has talked candidly about the challenges he still faces as a non-film industry professional. The Arjun Reddy actor recently talked candidly about the difficulties of navigating Tollywood without the benefit of strong support.
"I Didn't Have the Luxury to Say No" Vijay disclosed that in the early stages of his career, he was unable to afford to request changes or turn down flawed scripts. Since he has no industry support or backing, he said, "I don't have the privilege to tell a director that I'm not impressed with a flawed script." He clarified that this frequently compelled him to take what was given to him out of concern that no other opportunities would present themselves.
Vijay made a pointed analogy without naming names, citing a famous child who is free to request script revisions because of his father's connections in the business. Because of his father, an actor can tell the writers, 'This is not good,' and have it fixed. "I didn't have that freedom," he remarked, highlighting the glaring disparity between how careers are developed within and outside of film families.
Acclaimed films like Pelli Choopulu and Arjun Reddy marked the beginning of Vijay's ascent and solidified his status as one of Telugu cinema's top actors. He wanted to be more assertive, but his outsider status prevented him from doing so. "You're cautious when you don't have support." He acknowledged, "You don't know when the next opportunity will come, so you take what comes your way."
Vijay is on much more solid ground now. He mentioned that as he's gained experience, he's learned to speak to directors more politely and freely. "I've learned to tell filmmakers the truth now. "I say it if it doesn't work for me," he said. However, he remains conscious of the gap between actors who are born into the business and those who are self-made.
Vijay keeps getting better in spite of these obstacles. He has several more untitled high-profile movies in the works as he prepares for the July 31 premiere of Kingdom. Aspiring actors worldwide continue to find inspiration in his transformation from a struggling outsider to one of Telugu cinema's biggest stars.
